- Biography
Dr. Vicente Della Tonia, Jr. has performed solo and chamber recitals in concert halls throughout the United States, Spain, and his native country, Brazil. He has received top prize awards in numerous competitions, including the XXI Concurso Latino-Americano de Piano Rosa Mística, XX Concurso Nacional de Paulo Giovanini, III Concurso Nacional de Piano Maestro Rodrigo Tavares, etc. Vicente holds degrees from the University of South Carolina, Georgia State University, Universidade do Sagrado Coração and the Conservatório Musical de Lençóis Paulista. He studied under the guidance of Marina Lomazov, Judit Gabòs (Hungary), Scott Price (piano pedagogy), Sergio Gallo and Rosa Maria Tolon Marin (Cuba/Brazil). Additionally, Vicente was selected to participate in the “Piano Texas International Academy & Festival” (Fort Worth, Texas) and “Burgos International Music Festival” (Burgos, Spain), where he studied with Joseph Kalichstein, Tamás Ungár, Yoheved Kaplinsky e John Owings.
A dedicated researcher, Vicente has presented on the pedagogy and literature of the piano, with an emphasis on first year of study, collaborative playing, group instruction, improvisation, and the works of American and Latin American composers, with special attention to the Brazilian composer Heitor Villa-Lobos. As a presenter, he has given lectures and workshops at VII Coloquio do Seminario Permanente de História y Música (Mexico City), as well as at the Music Teacher National Association’s national and state conferences in Colorado, Georgia, Illinois, Minnesota, Nevada, Texas, South Carolina, and Washington.
A Nationally Certified Teacher of Music (NCTM), Dr. Della Tonia is currently Coordinator of Keyboard Studies and Assistant Professor of Piano at Georgia State University/Perimeter at Clarkston, where he teaches Piano and Music Appreciation. Prior to Georgia State, he was a faculty member at Allen University, University of South Carolina’s CMS in Columbia, SC, Claflin University in Orangeburg, SC; and Seminário Santo Antonio, Conservatório Musical de Lençóis Paulista, both in Brazil.
Dr. Vicente Della Tonia Junior is a recipient of the Steinway & Sons Top Teacher Award of the Year.
