Dr. Valerie N. Matthews is a professor of English at Georgia State University, Perimeter College. She holds a Ph.D. in English with a major in African American literature from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. During her career at Perimeter College, her scholarly and creative output has been geared towards her students and community. She is a recipient of the NISOD Teaching Excellence Award, and she has published several essays in reference books for students of literature. She has also used her musical gifts as a singer / songwriter to enhance her classes and make community presentations about the nexus between African American literature and music. Dr. Matthews has lectured and performed at libraries, schools, and churches throughout the southeast. She is also an active, involved mother of two children.
