Yes. Admission into the Honors College at Perimeter is very fluid. Associate degree-seeking students with a GPA of 3.5 after earning nine credit hours in college-level courses may join the Honors College. Perimeter College faculty members may also recommend students.
Every campus has an Honors College Coordinator. Students may contact a Campus Coordinator or contact the college-wide Honors College at Perimeter office at [email protected].
Honors Experience
Aside from the small classes and intimate learning environment, students have access to other benefits when they remain in good standing with the Honors College: one-on-one help with advising and registration, recognition on transcripts, recognition at the graduation ceremony, opportunities to attend honors conferences, designated study and community spaces, merit-based Honors College scholarships, support in pursuing national scholarships, opportunities to publish in our undergraduate research journal, help transferring to highly selective schools, and guaranteed transition directly to the Honors College at the Georgia State University Atlanta Campus.
While there are honors-specific scholarships offered through Perimeter College for the fall and spring semesters that students are encouraged to apply for, there is no guarantee of scholarships. Additionally, we do not offer financial assistance for students who take honors courses.
For students who are a little anxious about honors but want to challenge themselves, we encourage students to take an honors class in the subject they consider to be their strongest. This creates the best environment for the student to succeed and become more comfortable with what honors entails.
Courses
Each of the Perimeter College campuses offers a variety of honors courses, and the scheduled offerings change each term. The Honors College offers courses in Business, Fine Arts, Humanities, Mathematics, Science, and Social Science.
Typically, these classes have a maximum enrollment of 19 students and operate as seminars; thus, they are courses that provide an intimate learning environment that facilitates enhanced interaction with faculty members and other honors students. They emphasize communication skills, especially through class discussion and writing, and value covering material in depth. They often emphasize interdisciplinary approaches and working with primary materials.
Honors courses are intended to challenge serious students; however, the course outlines and syllabi are carefully constructed to parallel the workload of comparable non-honors courses. A major difference is in the type of assignments that are given and the flexibility built into many of those assignments so that students can pursue topics of interest to them.
Students earn the same number of credit hours in the Honors College sections of courses as they would in a non-honors version of that course, and honors sections of courses satisfy the same program of study requirements as the non-honors version of the course.
There is no minimum amount of honors courses to take each semester. As long as you take at least one honors course an academic year and maintain a 3.3 GPA or better, you are considered in good standing with the Honors College. We find that students often take more than one course during their time at Perimeter, but it is not a requirement.
Students must have the honors coding in order to register for honors classes. Please email [email protected] and include your PantherID so we can verify your eligibility and give you the necessary coding to register.
If you participated in a study abroad program with Perimeter College, you may be able to receive Honors College credit. Please email [email protected] with the semester and program you participated in.
Graduation
Students who have taken at least one honors class, earned a C or better in that class and earned an overall university GPA of 3.3 or better are eligible to receive an Honors College cord upon graduation.
Yes. Gold cords are distributed by Perimeter College to students who have earned a 3.5 GPA or better regardless of Honors College status.
