Cocurricular Awards Nomination Criteria
The 2023 STAR awards will be held at a virtual ceremony starting at 4 p.m., Tuesday, April 18, 2023. The Interim Dean of Perimeter College and the Associate Dean of the Honors College will recognize recipients of this year’s awards, along with student academic award recipients, during this event.
Perimeter College is accepting nominations for the 2022 cocurricular awards that are presented to student leaders, student organizations, and advisors to distinguish and appreciate outstanding contributions to the Perimeter College community.
General Information:
A complete list of the awards, award criteria and the nomination form are included below. Each nomination should include the name of the student and/or club, relationship to the student or club, the award the student or club is being nominated to receive, and an explanation no more than 350 words describing how the nominee has demonstrated the qualifications for the award.
To nominate a club or individual, please complete the nomination form here: Cocurricular Nominations. Use a separate form for each nomination. Please follow the instructions on the nomination form regarding how to submit the completed nomination.
General Information – who is eligible for awards and who can nominate:
All recognized student clubs and organizations, club advisors, directors, deans and other administrators (faculty and staff), as well as students, may submit nominations.
If self-nominating, please obtain two (2) reference letters from persons not related to you. Only completed nomination forms will be considered.
The 9 cocurricular award categories are as follows:
- The Dean’s Award
- Student Leadership Excellence Award
- Student Club and/or Organization of the Year Award
- Service Excellence Award
- “GRIT” Award
- Student Scholar Award for Outstanding Research
- Outstanding Honors College Student Award
- Advisor of the Year Award
- Academic Advisor of the Year Award
The Dean’s Award
This award recognizes an individual student that, although they may not necessarily hold a visible, established leadership position on campus, nonetheless has actively demonstrated attributes of a leader through his/her actions and character. Examples of such actions might include, but are not limited to, leadership in campus organizations and/or programs, significant contributions to the enhancement of the Perimeter College community, or the advocacy of issues/positions that affect students.
Additional Award Criteria:
- Nominees must not have been on any form of academic probation during the past academic year.
- Nominees must not have been found in violation of any Perimeter College policy during the past year.
- Nominees must have a 3.0 GPA at the time of nomination.
Student Leadership Excellence Award
This award recognizes an individual student who has made significant contributions to the Perimeter College community through leadership and service during his/her tenure as a student.
Additional Award Criteria:
- Nominees will have demonstrated a significant contribution to the college community through their leadership of, and/or involvement in an initiative(s) that has had college-wide (campus) impact and is representative of the highest level of student leadership and involvement.
- Nominees must not have been on any form of academic probation during the past academic year.
- Nominees must not have been found in violation of any college policy during the past year.
- Nominees must have a 2.5 GPA at time of nomination.
Student Club and/or Organization of the Year Award
This award honors an outstanding student organization for the achievement of a remarkable goal or completion of a major project that significantly affected students through advocacy or awareness initiatives (dedicated to providing quality educational, cultural, health-related, or social programs to a diverse student community). This can include but is not limited to increasing awareness about a particular issue across campus or taking a leadership role in the advancement of an issue or cause on campus.
Additional Award Criteria:
- The event/program/initiative must have been open to all Perimeter College students on campus.
- Nominees must have been a registered student organization while engaged in the pursuit and accomplishment of their project.
- The event/program must have been held during the past academic year.
- The organization must not have been found in violation of any Perimeter College policy during the period under consideration.
Service Excellence Award
This award honors and recognizes an individual student that has initiated and/or actively engaged in a community service project(s). The project may be a single event or a series of activities. This award is intended for those engaged in activities that offer direct service, as opposed to fundraising or lobbying activities, to a community external to Perimeter College.
Additional Award Criteria:
- The project should be one that required the delivery of service directly to the ultimate beneficiary and/or the development of a new service program/project designed to directly benefit an individual/organization.
- The project should have been significantly advanced during the past academic year.
- The project should directly benefit an individual/group in the off-campus community.
- Nominees must not have been on any form of academic probation during the past academic year.
- Nominees must not have been found in violation of any Perimeter College policy during the past year.
- Nominees must have a minimum of 50 community service hours documented (written verification must accompany nomination).
- Nominees must have a 2.5 GPA at time of nomination.
“GRIT” Award
This award recognizes the student who faced numerous challenges during the academic year, challenges that might have prompted him or her to quit, to leave school, or to fail. This student rose above all of those challenges, however, displaying perseverance in impressive ways and crossed the finish line. We proudly recognize this student for that determination of spirit and applaud his/her commitment to the goal of finishing strong.
Student Scholar Award for Outstanding Research
This award recognizes a student who has been actively engaged in a research project in his or her time at Perimeter. He or she shows integrity in adherence to research protocol and methods and has actively sought out ways to share the findings of that research. It is not necessary that the student has published a paper on the research, but a presentation at an academic conference definitely will be influential in the selection process.
This student must be nominated by a faculty member with whom he or she has worked closely on the research or one who is intimately familiar with the quality of research.
Outstanding Honors College Student Award
This award recognizes a high-achieving, intellectually curious student in the Honors College who has demonstrated the highest commitment to academic achievement. This student must have taken a minimum of three (3) Honors classes and maintained a 3.5 GPA or higher.
Additional Factors to Be Considered:
- Participation in an Honors conference or Georgia State University Undergraduate Research Conference (GSURC)
- Service and leadership on campus and in the community
- Attendance at Honors programming events and/or pursuit of additional opportunities in Honors, including scholarships
- Support of an Honors faculty member and/or campus coordinator for Honors. The official nomination of the student should come from a person in one of those positions. A brief statement of support should come from the other, non-nominating entity.
Advisor of the Year Award
This award honors an advisor of a student organization(s) who has provided outstanding service and advisement to the organization.
Additional Award Criteria:
- Student organization must have been properly registered with the Office of Student Life during the year.
- Nominees must have demonstrated outstanding support for and advisement of a student organization in pursuit of its goals.
- Nominees must have met the criteria to be a student organization advisor.
- Nominees must be an employee of the college in good standing.
Academic Advisor of the Year Award
This award honors an academic advisor who has provided outstanding service and advisement to students throughout the most recent academic year.
Additional Award Criteria:
- Nominees must be an employee of the college in good standing.
- Nominees must have demonstrated outstanding support for and advisement of Perimeter College students.
- Nominee must have the support of a director in advising.
- Nominees must have been in service of our Perimeter students for at least two semesters and must have attended New Student Orientations.
