THE 2023 MARIO AJ BENNEKIN BLACK HISTORY SYMPOSIUM - STUDENT RECOGNITION AWARD

has been presented with the 2023 Black History Student Recognition Award for her compelling piece of artwork titled “Jumprope Antiquity,” as shown below. Please join us in celebrating Ms. Shana Jackson as this year’s 2023 Black History Student Recognition Award winner.
The study of Black history is essential for addressing contemporary issues in order to move positively toward the future. Education is foundational to tolerance, respect, and understanding. African Americans must tell their own stories from their own perspectives.
The theme for the competition was “A Black History Movement: Knowing the Past Opens the Door to the Future.”
Students were asked to submit an original piece of work, such as scholarly papers, poems/spoken word, artwork, original music and other forms of expression related to the previous year’s (2022) competition theme. In addition, the student’s work must follow one of the following core tenets:
1. The study of Black history is essential for addressing contemporary issues in order to move positively toward the future.
2. Education is foundational to tolerance, respect, and understanding.
3. African Americans must tell their own stories from their own perspectives.
