Name: Marcus Rhymes
Position/Department: Assistant Professor of Mathematics
Newton Campus
Years at college: 17 1/2 years
- Can you describe the work you do each day? I am a full-time faculty member and currently teach math on the Newton Campus. I participate on various committees including the Curriculum committee for College Algebra which I have chaired for the past few semesters, the Math department Executive Committee, the university Senate Committee, Project RAISE (Raising Achievement and Increasing Success in Education), the Black Male Student Mentor Initiative, and the Newton Campus Academic Community Engagement program. I also volunteer to work with the open houses that we have each semester
- How do you think your work impacts student success and the college? Greatly! I have students that come back and tell me how they enjoyed the class. (I have cards and emails from them). One particular student is now working on the Newton Campus and always states that I was her math professor.
- What is the most satisfying project you’ve worked on? Currently being a mentor. I have students that stop by once or twice a semester that tell me about their campus experience, what they have planned for next semester, what their goals are, etc.
- Tell us something about yourself that might surprise others I like riding sport bikes. Usually, friends and I head to Helen, Ga., to enjoy the ride and scenery.
- What do you do when you’re not working? When I’m not working, I’m hanging out with my good friends, going to different restaurants and of course, R&R.
- Do you have a philosophy of life? Treat others as you would want them to treat you and don’t judge a book by its cover.
