Who said summer is time to slow down? For our LPN to RN Bridge students, it’s been all systems go.
This “bridge” program has been graduating nurses since the mid 1980s. During this past summer, we had a great cohort of 18 LPN students successfully balancing a full schedule of classroom and community work. The summer schedule allows the students to benefit from smaller class sizes with a strong focus on clinical application. The LPNs are able to graduate with a nursing degree within three semesters. Their anticipated graduation date is May 2020.
To keep things exciting for these students, nursing instructor Valencia Freeman created a fun, hands-on “Escape Room” simulation experience this summer, which challenged the LPNs to work as a team and use their critical thinking skills to “save” their patient’s life. Check out the story and photos about the students’ experience in this issue of Perimeter College RN.
Speaking of LPNs, we recently ran into one of our 2016 LPN to RN Bridge graduates (who also was the recipient of the Jessica Bryl Award), during a recruitment fair in May at Piedmont Newton Hospital. Dawn Berg was an LPN for years before enrolling in the LPN to RN Bridge program in 2013 at Perimeter College. She was 58 years old when she graduated — proof that it’s never too late to follow your dreams. Dawn now works in general surgery at Piedmont Newton Hospital in Covington.
Perimeter’s Nursing program has been busy on other fronts, too. In late spring, we recognized 70 graduates in the traditional Nursing Pinning Ceremony, held May 6 at Georgia Piedmont Technical College in Clarkston. I’m also happy to report that our current National Council Licensure Examination (NCLEX) pass rate is 95.12 percent on first try, which reflects the performance of the December 2018 and most of the May 2019 graduates. I also wanted to mention that as of August 2, our Men in Nursing organization was affiliated with the national American Association of Men in Nursing national organization. Four of our students are expected to go to Florida in October to the AAMN conference.
We love to see where our alumni land! Please share any news with me, Contessar Maddox, at email@example.com, or Rebecca Rakoczy, firstname.lastname@example.org, so she can include your good news in the next issue of Perimeter College RN.
